Physical therapy for headaches

Headaches are one of the most common complaints and can affect your daily life in a variety of ways. Whether it is a mild oppressive pain or a severe migraine, headaches can significantly disrupt your productivity, mood and well-being.

What causes headaches?

Headaches can have a variety of causes, from tension in the neck and shoulders to underlying medical conditions.

Common causes of headaches are:

  • Tension headache: It is often caused by stress, poor posture or sitting in the same position for long periods of time. It leads to a pulling, dull pain around the head, usually due to tense neck and shoulder muscles.
  • Migraine: Migraine is a neurological disorder often associated with intense pain on one side of the head, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and sometimes visual disturbances.
  • Cervicogenic headache: This type of headache stems from problems in the neck, such as tense or cramped muscles. The pain often radiates to the head, making it seem as if the headache is coming from the brain, while the origin is in the neck.
  • Poor sleep: Chronic lack of sleep or poor sleep quality can lead to headaches due to increased muscle tension or a disturbance in body hormones.
