Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine exhibits a lateral curvature, usually in the shape of an “S” or “C.” It can occur in different areas of the spine, but is most common in the chest and lower back region. The curvature can be mild, but in some cases it can worsen, leading to pain or even restrictions in movement. The vertebrae can also rotate due to this curvature, which can increase pressure on the nerves and cause other discomfort.
What causes scoliosis?
Scoliosis can have several causes, although in many cases the exact cause is unknown. Scoliosis may additionally be congenital, a result of a neurological disorder or a consequence of aging.
What do you notice about scoliosis?
The symptoms of scoliosis can vary, depending on the severity of the curvature and the location of the vertebrae. Common symptoms include:
- A noticeable curvature in the back, visible as an “S” or “C” shape
- Pain in the back, especially after prolonged periods of sitting or standing
- Discomfort or stiffness in the back muscles
- Asymmetry in the shoulders or hips (one shoulder may be higher than the other)

How can we help?
At VMfysio, we offer treatments aimed at relieving the symptoms of scoliosis and improving spinal function. We take a thorough look at your situation and offer a customized treatment plan. This may include exercise therapy to strengthen the back and abdominal muscles to better support the spine. We may also use manual therapy to relieve muscle tension and increase range of motion.
Scoliosis can be well managed with physical therapy in many cases, especially when the curvature is mild or in the early stages of the condition. The goal of treatment is to prevent further worsening of the curvature, reduce pain and improve mobility. In some cases, physical therapy can help improve posture and significantly increase quality of life.
